Most enterprises, communities and individuals that use marine and coastal resources for their livelihoods have an interest in sustainably using those resources. These conservation enterprises often times need greater awareness and information to reduce to threats to marine and coastal habitats and species.
Coral reefs and the related marine ecosystems are some of the most biodiverse areas on the planet, home to a significant amount of the world’s marine species. These ecosystems, which also include mangroves and seagrasses, also play an important role in protecting against storm surge, minimizing erosion, serving as nursery habitats for commercially important fish species and supporting livelihoods and economic activities of coastal communities through tourism and fishing.
Coral reefs and the related marine ecosystems are under threat globally, which threatens the livelihoods these precious resources provide to millions of people. Rising sea temperature, rising sea levels, ocean acidification as well as overfishing, destructive fishing practices, land-based and sea-based pollution, coastal development, and tourism can all impact the ability of these marine ecosystems to function properly.
We at MMS will help communities document the marine biodiversity in the communities we serve, through photographs and inventories and identifying IUCN Red List status. Based on our analysis, we will support communities in designing or updating conservation-related policies as necessary and to work with government to get rules put in place. We will help to identify additional conservation programs that can support the communities based on identified needs. And we can help design market systems approaches to help finance conservation initiatives.
Marine Market Systems (MMS) is working to help communities and governments to harness market forces for positive marine conservation outcomes. If communities and governments understand the mutual beneficial value of conservation of marine ecosystems, and put in the necessary rules, structures and conditions, marine ecosystems will thrive, driving responsible tourism and increasing fish stocks, both of which will have positive impacts for the marine ecosystems themselves, but also the communities depending on those marine ecosystems.
